Doctoral School in International Development

The Canadian Association for the Study of International Development (CASID) is pleased to announce the 2018 CASID PhD School, the second of an annual event scheduled over three years (2017-2019).
Objectives:
The aim of the school is to provide doctoral students with the opportunity to receive extensive intellectual and methodological advice on their doctoral research as well as other aspects of professional development such as publishing their research in peer-reviewed, policy and popular media venues; identifying future professional opportunities; and planning for careers within and outside academe. Taken together, these skills will enable doctoral students to pursue academic research within university settings as well as non-academic careers in research with international development organizations. In recent years, there has been growing pressure upon universities in general -- and the social sciences, arts and humanities in particular -- to provide students not just with the theoretical and conceptual grounding in different disciplinary and interdisciplinary fields but also with professional skills and training for well-respected careers in non-academic environments. Participants in the PhD School will learn about such options and career trajectories from established scholar-practitioners as well as professionals in policy formulation, development consulting and civil society organizations. They will also have opportunities to network with their peers in doctoral programs across Canada and emerging and senior scholars and practitioners in international development.
Eligibility and Selection Criteria:
The CASID PhD School is open to all doctoral students in the disciplinary or interdisciplinary study of international development, across the different regions in the world, and at all stages of their doctoral research. A narrative description of the dissertation topic (to a maximum of five double-spaced typed pages), a curriculum vitae, and a short letter of application explaining why the student wants to take part in the doctoral school will be required for submission. Applicants must make sure to include in their letter of application:
- Institution
- PhD working title
- PhD field of study
- Principal supervisor(s)
- Years to completion
Participation in the Doctoral School will be limited to 20 applicants who are members in good-standing of CASID. Students do not need to be CASID members at the time of applying but they should be at the time of the PhD School (for membership information see: https://www.casid-acedi.ca/membership). The language of instruction is English. Participants will be selected based on the submitted descriptions, the potential for useful exchanges among them, and a concern to include a wide range of disciplinary perspectives, intellectual traditions, and regions within and outside Canada.
CCIC-CASID Next-Generation: Collaboration for Development Program
The Canadian Council for International Co-operation (CCIC) and CASID are responsible for a new research program entitled Next-Generation Leadership: New Models for Canadian Collaboration in International Development. Over a three-year program (2017—2019) funded by the International Development Research Centre of Canada (IDRC), CCIC and CASID will identify and promote new ways of working among practitioners, researchers, academics, students and policy developers. Participants in the CASID PhD School are also expected to attend the conference (a special rate is available), Is Canada Back? Delivering on Good Intentions, hosted jointly by the Canadian Council for International Cooperation (CCIC), CASID and Carleton University in Ottawa on September 19 and 20, 2018. Subsidies for attending CASID PhD School:
CASID will subsidize the cost of the travel for participants coming from outside Ottawa on a sliding scale. We will provide up to a maximum of $600 per student for those travelling from outside Ontario and Quebec and a maximum of $400 for those travelling within Ontario but at a distance of more than 4 hours (Toronto, Guelph, Waterloo, London, Quebec City, Sherbrooke, for example) and $250 for those within a 2.5-hour commute (Kingston and Montreal). Students will be responsible for finding their own accommodations. Students may need to seek financial support from their home institutions to cover additional costs for food, accommodations, etc. outside the subsidy provided by CASID. Applications should be submitted to Noelia Ruiz at nruiz@ccic.ca and copied to the CASID President, Bipasha Baruah at bbaruah@uwo.ca with the subject title “Application for CASID PhD School” and must be submitted by July 31, 2018. Applicants will be informed if they have been selected for the workshop by August 15, 2018.
