The Canadian Journal of Development Studies / Revue canadienne d’études du développement (CJDS) is looking for a new host institution for January 1st, 2020. The journal is nationally-based but internationally-oriented with an excellent reputation. It is the flagship journal of the Canadian Association for the Study of International Development (CASID). The journal is a “peer-reviewed, inter-disciplinary, bilingual forum for critical research and reflection on the complex problems of international development theory, policy and practice”. Measured by citation impact factor, CJDS is among the top 3 interdisciplinary social science journals edited in Canada. In 2017 our 5-year impact factor reached 1.145 – the highest to date. CJDS values diversity: recently we were ranked #2 among the top 10 IDS journals worldwide for the proportion of content by authors who are based in developing countries.
The new Editorial Office can be co-located with the Editor-In-Chief (EIC) but it does not need to be. Haroon Akram Lodhi of Trent University is currently the EIC of the journal and Martha Snodgrass of Simon Fraser University is Administrative Editor. Both are willing to answer questions about this Call for Proposals.
In considering hosting the journal, it is important that the institution has the status and capacity to apply for, receive and manage grant funds and other contributions that support the journal’s operations. It is also important that either the EIC or a member of the journal’s Editorial Board (which can be appointed after approval of the proposal) be located at the host institution in order to oversee the work of the Managing Editor.
At present, the journal has a 3-year grant from SSHRC to assist in its publication. The journal’s funding model may undergo a transition in the next few years and this will be discussed with any potential host institution. The Editorial Office usually hires students part-time, via work-study, or as research assistants to work as editorial assistants, so an institution with MA and or PhD programs would be ideal.
Institutions interested in proposing to host the journal should submit a brief proposal detailing how they fulfil the requirements above as well as who their Administrative Editor may be and where editorial assistants may be drawn from, the potential location of office space for both, and (if desired) an indication of potential EIC and/or Editorial Board member. The proposal should be 1 to 2 pages in length as it is just preliminary with more detailed logistics to be negotiated.
