The Kari Polanyi-Levitt Prize is CASID's annual Graduate Student Essay Contest. The Kari Polanyi-Levitt Prize is awarded annually to the best original essay by a graduate student in the area of international development studies. The Prize includes $1000 cash, and consideration of the essay in the regular editorial process of the Canadian Journal of Development Studies (CJDS).

To assist in assessing the essays submitted, the following guidelines have been adapted from those used by the Canadian Journal of Development Studies.

Guidelines for Submissions

  • Submitters must be, or become, members of CASID.
  • Submitters must be Canadian graduate students or international students registered at a Canadian university.
  • The student must be the sole author of the paper submitted.
  • The winner of this award must present their paper in “Development Reconnected: A CASID Student Research Symposium”, which is being held on June 17, 2020 via Zoom. All CASID members will be invited to attend this virtual symposium.

Editorial Guidelines

  • Ensure that your article is no longer than 9000 words and is submitted on double-spaced pages.
  • Include a cover page stating the title of the article and author’s name. Do not put identifying information on the rest of the article, as the cover page is removed for the review process, which is anonymous.
  • Include an introduction, a conclusion, and a bibliography or list of references.
  • Print on one side of the paper only (letter size, 8.5 x 11) with a margin of at least 1 inch all around. If using A4 size paper please leave a 2-inch margin at the bottom.
  • Double space and left align text (leaving a ragged right margin) throughout.
  • Language should be respectful of diversity and difference.
  • Check for grammar and spelling errors before submission.

Essays not meeting the basic editorial guidelines may not be assessed by the Prize Committee. Detailed editorial guidelines will be provided on request, or view at the CJDS web site at www.cjds.ca/author_guide/index.html.

Deadline: Complete papers must be submitted in electronic form (MS Word) by May 17, 2020.

Submissions and questions should be directed to cjdseditor@gmail.com

All submissions received by the due date will be reviewed prior to a short-listing of the papers to be considered for the prize. Due to the volume of submissions received, non-short-listed papers will not receive any comments.
